A Guide to Camping at Howgill Lodge

There is something rather nice about waking up at a campsite where the view is already part of the experience.

At Howgill Lodge, our camping pitches are surrounded by beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside, giving you the chance to enjoy a traditional camping break with plenty of space to relax, explore, and enjoy the outdoors.

If you enjoy getting away from busy routines and spending a few days outside, camping is a wonderfully simple way to experience the area. Wake up with the fresh air, head out for the day and come back to your pitch when you are ready to slow things down.

Choosing Your Camping Pitch

One of the nice things about camping is being able to make your stay your own.

Some people are happiest spending most of the day exploring, while others enjoy making the campsite part of the holiday. Breakfast outside, a book in the afternoon, and sitting around together in the evening can be just as enjoyable as a busy day out.

Our camping pitches give you a comfortable base for doing exactly that, with the surrounding countryside providing plenty of space to breathe and relax.

If you are visiting for the first time and want to get a better idea of the site before you arrive, our virtual tour gives you a useful look around Howgill Lodge.

A Great Base for Exploring the Dales

Of course, your pitch is only part of the experience.

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Howgill Lodge is being surrounded by so much countryside to explore. You can spend a morning heading out on foot, return for lunch, then head back out later in the day if you fancy seeing somewhere different.

There are plenty of routes to choose from, and our guide to walks around the Yorkshire Dales is a good starting point if you are deciding where to go.

You do not need to plan a huge hike every day either. A gentle countryside walk followed by a pub lunch can be just as enjoyable as a full day on the hills.

Camping with Plenty to Discover Nearby

When you are staying in the Dales, it is tempting to think you need to travel miles to find something interesting.

There are beautiful villages, historic attractions, riverside walks, and family friendly days out all within easy reach of Howgill Lodge. Whether you fancy exploring somewhere new or simply want to find a nice spot for lunch, there is plenty to keep you occupied.

For families, there are also plenty of ideas for days out with the family, from attractions to places where children can simply run around and enjoy being outdoors.

The Simple Pleasure of Camping

There is something quite different about camping compared with other types of holiday.

You wake up and step outside rather than walking through a hotel corridor. Breakfast tastes better in the fresh air, children can head outside to play, and evenings tend to last a little longer when everyone is sitting around together.

It is a chance to spend less time looking at screens and more time actually enjoying where you are.

And when the sun starts to go down, the countryside can feel particularly peaceful.

Everything You Need Close By

Although camping is about getting back to basics, that does not mean you need to go without the useful things that make a stay easier.

Our on site facilities include the essentials you need during your stay, while the reception and on site shop can be handy when you need a few extra supplies or have forgotten something.

It is those little conveniences that can make a difference, particularly when you have children with you or you are staying for several nights.

There Is Plenty for Children to Explore

Camping and children tend to go hand in hand.

There is something about having open space outside the tent that makes even an ordinary afternoon feel like an adventure. At Howgill Lodge, children have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, playground, football pitch and see the alpacas.

There are also plenty of ideas for fun for kids nearby, so you can mix relaxed days at the campsite with days out exploring the surrounding area.

And then there are our alpacas, which are always a favourite with younger visitors. They have become a rather important part of life at Howgill Lodge and are certainly worth meeting during your stay.

Bring the Dog Along Too

For many people, camping would not feel quite right without bringing their four-legged friend along too.

The Yorkshire Dales is a brilliant place to explore with a four legged companion, with plenty of countryside and walking routes to discover together.

Howgill Lodge is dog friendly too, with plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors and a dedicated dog-agility course in our dog walking field. We have put together some ideas for dog friendly fun on site to help you make the most of your stay together.

After a day exploring, there is nothing better than coming back to your pitch, putting your feet up and watching your dog happily settle down after a day of adventures.

Making Your Camping Trip Your Own

That is probably the best thing about camping at Howgill Lodge.

There is no set way to spend your time here.

You might spend the whole day exploring the Dales, or you might wake up slowly, have breakfast outside and spend most of the afternoon enjoying your pitch. You could head into a nearby village for lunch, find a scenic walking route or simply sit back and enjoy the views.

When you are ready to explore further, there are plenty of nearby places and attractions to discover.

That freedom is what makes camping so enjoyable.
