5 Scenic Walks in the Yorkshire Dales That Don’t Require Hiking Boots
Not every walk in the Yorkshire Dales has to involve steep climbs, muddy trails, or a full day on the hills.
Sometimes, the best days out are the simplest ones. A gentle stroll through beautiful countryside, a wander beside the river, or a peaceful walk around a picture-perfect village can be just as rewarding as reaching the top of a summit.
Whether you are visiting with young children, bringing the dog, or simply fancy taking things a little easier, there are plenty of walks where comfortable trainers are all you need.
Here are five of our favourites, all within easy reach of Howgill Lodge.
1. Bolton Abbey Riverside Walk
It would be hard to talk about easy walks in the Yorkshire Dales without mentioning Bolton Abbey.
The riverside paths here are ideal if you want to stretch your legs without tackling anything too challenging. Most of the route is well maintained, with plenty of space to walk side by side while enjoying views of the River Wharfe.
The famous stepping stones are always worth a visit, and there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic or simply sit and watch the water flow past.
It is the sort of walk where you can take your time. There is no rush, making it enjoyable and the perfect family day out.

2. Grassington to Linton
If you enjoy exploring Yorkshire villages, this walk is well worth adding to your list.
The route between Grassington and Linton is short, peaceful and easy to follow, taking you through open countryside before arriving in one of the prettiest villages in the Dales.
Once you reach Linton, take a look around before heading back to Grassington, where you will find plenty of independent cafés and traditional pubs waiting for you.

3. Burnsall Riverside Walk
Burnsall village itself is beautiful, and the gentle riverside paths make it an excellent choice if you are looking for a relaxed afternoon outdoors.

You’ll also spot ducks, herons, or other wildlife along the way during a nice walk out.
4. Malham Village and Janet’s Foss
Malham is famous for its spectacular scenery, but you do not need to complete the full Malham Cove walk to enjoy the area.
A gentle walk from the village to Janet’s Foss is suitable for most people and rewards you with one of the prettiest waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales.
The woodland path provides welcome shade during warmer weather, and the sound of the flowing water makes the whole walk feel peaceful from start to finish.

5. The Dales Way Around Appletreewick

Once you are back in the village, it would almost feel wrong not to stop for a drink or a bite to eat before heading back.
You Do Not Have to Walk for Miles
One of the nicest things about the Yorkshire Dales is that you do not have to climb a mountain to appreciate just how beautiful it is.
Some of the best views come from riverside paths, quiet villages, and gentle countryside walks where the focus is less on reaching a destination and more on enjoying the journey.
That is exactly what makes this part of Yorkshire so special. You can spend a couple of hours outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and return feeling like you have had a proper escape.
